CHINA IS NOT A 'FRIEND'by James ReedA new book by Ted C. Fishman entitled China.Inc: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World, is required reading for anyone concerned about "Australia's Asia destiny" (the book is readily available in most mainstream book stores…ed). Fishman is not anti-China-power but he does raise the question "What would happen when China will be able to manufacture everything - computers, cars, jumbo jets and pharmaceuticals - that the United States and Europe can, at perhaps half the cost!" Fishman raises the question in his factual book documenting China's emerging industrial might, but he does not confront the grim reality of the de-industrialisation of the once White West. De-industrialised societies essentially fall apart and the standard of living declines. Industry is needed to maintain a critical intellectual and technological infrastructure and without it nations face deskilling and social decline, perhaps to the point that they are no longer able to defend themselves. An article in The Australian 3 August 2005 "Japan to Speed Up Missile Defence" mentions in passing that the Japanese government's deployment of a ballistic missile shield is not merely against the "threat" of North Korean attacks, but also "Chinese attacks". The CIA has made it public that the only nation which has nuclear missiles trained on American cities is China. |

THE PEKING-CANBERRA AXIS - ON TARGET 26 JANUARY 1973Pondering on the fact that Australia has become "the quarry-colony of Asia" and Australians are now on the road to competing more and more as wage-slaves with their counterparts in Asia, they cannot say they weren't warned. Nearly thirty years ago the following warning was published in this journal. "Australia and New Zealand are to press for the inclusion of China in an Asian and Pacific mutual assistance organisation. The organisation could be the existing Asian and Pacific Council (ASPAC), but only if Taiwan was replaced by China. The Australian and New Zealand Prime Ministers disclosed this today in a communiqué and Press conference after two days of discussion between Mr. Whitlam and Mr. Kirk. Australia. N.Z. and Japan - ASPAC members who have recognised China - are embarrassed by Taiwan's membership in ASPAC." - The Australian, January 23rd. The hard-nosed men in Peking must be extremely pleased with the manner in which the Whitlam Government is developing a foreign policy which implies that Australia has nothing whatever to fear from Red China… Labor Senator J. Wheeldon has been to North Vietnam at the invitation of the North Vietnam Peace Committee, an organisation sponsored by the Communist Government in Hanoi. The invitation to Senator Wheeldon and his colleagues was extended through the Sydney-based Association for International Co-operation and Disarmament, to "study" the extent of the damage of recent American bombing. There is no suggestion that a study is to be made of the results of Communist terror in South Vietnam… Southern Africa is one of the Free World's major front lines, which is the reason it is being subject to increasing pressure from the north by terrorist guerrillas backed by Red China. Rhodesia is fighting for survival against the Red Chinese strategy, while Canberra sides with Peking by attempting to apply increasing pressure on Rhodesia. The Association for International Co-operation and Disarmament is permitted to flood Australia with pro-Communist propaganda while the Sydney based Rhodesian Information Centre, representing a country, which is threatening no one, is marked down for destruction by Mr. Whitlam "if he is permitted to get away with it". Suffering from the same disastrous drought conditions now affecting large areas of Australia, Rhodesia has even been cut off from Australian wheat. A number of the Government's Members, Mr. Kim Beazley, Mr. G, Duthie, Mr. Frank Crean, to name only three, term themselves Christians. We would be interested to learn how they can attempt to justify the Whitlam Government's whitewashing of Peking while at the same time lending support to the mounting international campaign against Rhodesia, the Portuguese Territories and South Africa. Opening Zambia's Parliament on January 10th, President Kaunda, who provides a base for Communist backed terrorists, said he "warmly welcomed" the policies of the new Australian and New Zealand Governments on Southern Africa." |

Callagahan, managing director of the Commonwealth Banking Corporation, warned Australians they ignored changes in neighbouring countries at their own peril, The Australian, July 9th, 1971. Mr. Callagahan said Australia should avoid becoming little more than an international quarry for more farsighted people. He said Australia had to avoid the "she'll be right mate" state of mind, which could make these foreign quarries a permanent feature. Don't let us sit back complacent in the thought of our growing income from those holes in the ground, and watch the Japanese steel industry increase its output by 12 per cent a year right through the 1970's." We could not agree more with Mr. Callagahan, and it is good to see him speaking out, as he has on so many occasions on matters of this kind. However, it is equally a pity, that a man of such understanding does not associate the banking policies of the Reserve Bank, along with general financial policies controlled by the Treasury, with the cause of the problem he is concerned about. The insane policy of "capital inflow" at all costs, the growing internal debt structure which robs Australians of investing in their own heritage, and thus providing the financial capital to control and exploit our own resources, in our own best interests, are a direct result of domestic financial policy. PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPSFrom www.womensgroup.orgPublic-private partnerships (PPP) are basically the partnering on a business level of government and business. This is a radical shift in the structure of government as it allows businesses to co-manage with them, be it a water facility, electricity, sewers, toll roads and the like. It's the old-fashioned Fascism all over again Known in the old World War II days as fascism, this evolving shift in the structure of government was given a lift when the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan went to the World Economic Forum in 1999 and asked corporations to help the UN accomplish its goals of feeding the poor and alleviating poverty in poor countries. This year, the IBLF has come up with a new study showing that CEOs favour public-private partnerships as the way to develop third world countries. The World Economic Forum also has its share of royalty. Sheiks, kings, princes, dukes and princesses have all graced the podium or workshops, networking and rubbing shoulders with their counterparts on the corporate level. Bottom line: it is all about money and power - who has it and who is going to get it. At every turn, it is public-private partnership, selling off government owned resources, or privatizing through partnering with business. President Bush has set up his own initiative, the Millennium Challenge Corporation-MCC, a U.S. government corporation, to administer funds. An informational brochure handed out described it as "an innovative new foreign assistance program designed to eliminate extreme poverty and promote sustainable economic growth." The purpose is to set up public-private partnerships-PPP. PPP's are business arrangements for governments to transfer state-owned assets to. Since it is a business arrangement, it is run by the corporate partner. |
THE ADVENTURES OF A 'RACIST' PROFESSORby James ReedI have been following with interest the 'debate' about "racist" professor Andrew Fraser of Macquarie University. The Australian 27 July 2005 reports that Professor Fraser said he would be sacked because his views were to be seen to threaten the income the university derived from foreign students: "This is a message to young academics that they are at serious risk if they are not committed to the politically correct orthodoxy… This is the Soviet Union all over again." The Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor Di Yerbury denied that there was a sack threat, for the university has merely invited him to bring forward his retirement: "It doesn't necessarily mean the sack". The Australian 30-31 July reports that Professor Fraser has been suspended. Professor Fraser described Yerbury as an "intellectual coward". Yerbury suspended the professor because of "fears" of disruption of his classes by the usual rent-a-crowd folk. This is merely a smokescreen for Yerbury's political correctness, that involved apologising to the African community. Students though expressed strong support for Professor Fraser's right to free speech: The Australian 1/8/05. The National Tertiary Education Union has moved to support his rights. This type of support would never have been available in the 1980s and 1990s. There is at last a growing awakening of the evils of the religion of political correctness. |
MORE ON THE "JOYS" OF MULTICULTURALISMby James ReedJustice Minister Chris Ellison has said that the practice of teenagers being flown to Lebanon by their families and forced into marriages was "tantamount to sexual trafficking" and would be punished by new laws which punished sexual trafficking with 25 years in prison. Teenage girls as young as 14 were involved. But it was not just the Arab-Australian community which was involved but also the African-Australian community, if not involved in the 'export trade', at least had a problem with "early marriage". The article quotes NSW Community Relations Commission Chair Stepan Kerkyasharian as saying that forced marriages were against the spirit of multiculturalism. How can that be? Such forced marriages are arrangements in the Arab and African world that have been conducted for all of recorded history - before even than the emergence of the West. If anything is a part of multiculturalism (that all cultural traditions are equally valid), it is forced marriages. Multicultural policy has never openly embraced its implicit cultural relativism as an official policy. 'FOREIGN AID' FOR THE RICH THIEVESfrom Paul Fromm, Canada FirstWhen Citizens for Foreign Aid Reform (C-FAR) was formed in 1979, we argued that, all too often, foreign aid was a scheme for transferring wealth from the working and middle classes of the West to the rich thieves in the Third World. The intervening years have seen tens of billions of dollars transferred to Africa and, yet, the net number of poor people has increased. The following article by George Jonas is a stern warning that the hysterical calls of has-been rock stars like Bob Geldof and Bono for even more sacrifices on the part of Western taxpayers should be ignored. While Prime Minister Paul Martin resisted the more extreme calls for massive aid hikes at the recent G-8 conference at Gleneagles, Scotland, he still remains committed to hefty increases in Canadian foreign aid. Our aid should be pared back to disaster relief only, and some long needed tax relief be offered to the Canadian taxpayer. Subsidizing African Misery by George Jonas National Post, Canada, 8 August, 2005. Swiss taxpayers are beginning to note that private jets are expensive. In 2002, the Federal Council of Switzerland spent about 12 million Swiss francs ($11.5-million) on a modest model for its own use. That was just a small bite, however. The big bite for Swiss taxpayers was the jet Tanzania's government bought for its president. It cost almost 50 million francs. The Swiss taxpayers paid for both planes. Tanzania, proud if economically challenged East African home of the new jet, was subsidized by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation to the tune of $31-million last year. The numbers demonstrate the First Law of International Welfare: The cost of a presidential jet is in proportion to the foreign aid a country receives. The lower a country's median income or GNP, the higher the model designation on its Gulfstream. If the president travels in a G-II, the population still eats. A G-IV threatens starvation, and a G-V ensures it. We live in times when an aid recipient's jet-propelled status symbol costs four times as much as a donor's. Switzerland receives no aid from any country, least of all Tanzania, which is probably why the Swiss government's flying toy isn't as plush as the Tanzanian government's (or the Ugandan's, for that matter, which cost a reported US$38-million). The figures come from a recent issue of Switzerland's Neue Zurcher Zeitung, couriered to me by a friend. Kurt Pelda's article, entitled "How Africa is being Paralyzed through Money", brings to mind the famous Wa-Benzis of the 1970s, subjects of much media attention at the time (not to mention a recent essay in these pages by The Spectator's Aidan Hartley). In Africa, where everyone's identity is pretty much derived from his or her tribe, the Wa-Benzis emerged as a "tribe" of newly rich government officials named after their Mercedes-Benz automobiles. The freshly minted African elite siphoned off the cream of the foreign aid and investment coming from the West, diverting it back to Western suppliers of luxury items. The taxpayers of North America and Europe weren't subsidizing the famished people of Africa as much as the well-fed shareholders of Mercedes-Benz. Africa's big problem, however, wasn't the money that was stolen. The big problem turned out to be the money that wasn't stolen. Africa could have survived the loss of what was skimmed off the top by the kleptocracy of the Wa-Benzis; it was the aid that reached it that brought the dark continent to its knees. Booting up the computer and typing "Africa+aid+futility" into an Internet search engine brings 67,600 responses. The first one to pop up is a syndicated article from last month by Thomas Sowell, called "The tragedy of Africa: foreign aid and debt forgiveness". "Why would anyone think that promoting irresponsible government borrowing by periodically 'forgiving' their debts is going to help African countries in the long run?" asks Mr. Sowell. Because, he answers, "such policies benefit the bureaucracies that administer foreign aid and enable vain people to see themselves as saviours, even when they are doing more harm than good." The same "vain people" would no doubt like to dismiss Mr. Sowell as a racist. This comforting course isn't open to them because the pundit in question happens to be black. He seems at ease pointing out that India started producing surplus wheat when the West stopped dumping wheat into India as "aid" during famines. He comments on pickets surrounding G8 meetings in Scotland with "Save Africa" signs: "Looking back over the decades and generations, Africa has been 'saved' so many times that you have to wonder why it still needs saving." One reason Africa needs saving is because it's being prevented from saving itself. It's prevented by policies of foreign aid and debt forgiveness. It's prevented by programs that reward dependency, mismanagement and misfortune, while punishing industry, productivity, foresight and even good luck. It's prevented by officials and academics who favour subsidizing presidential jets in Tanzania, while calling for the infliction of pain on ordinary Canadians. This isn't a figure of speech The director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, John Williamson, wrote last week in the Financial Post about academics in Canada calling on the government "to get radical" about implementing the Kyoto accords. Kyoto, of course, is the left's hare-brained environmental scheme -- or scam -- that intends to reduce pollution by paying other countries to pollute. Under Kyoto, developed countries pay for polluting and less developed countries get paid for it. For total emissions, therefore, Kyoto means little change. For ordinary Tanzanians, it won't mean much. But for the president, it could mean an upgraded jet, depending on what kind of pay-to-pollute scheme is adopted. For Canadians, Kyoto means higher energy prices, coupled with fewer jobs. Professors Douglas Macdonald and Debora Van Ninjatten, respectively of the University of Toronto and Wilfred Laurier University, are quoted by Mr. Williamson as having written that the "infliction of such pain is politically viable." Maybe. Canadians have been gluttons for punishment. They've been champions of wrong choices. But even they may be reaching the end of their tether. |

When the New York Times comes out with the above headlines we are encouraged that 'the reality is finally beginning to bite'! "Like the Japanese soldier marooned on an island for years after V-J Day, President Bush may be the last person in the country to learn that for Americans, if not Iraqis, the war in Iraq is over. "We will stay the course," he insistently tells us from his Texas ranch. What do you mean we, white man? A president can't stay the course when his own citizens (let alone his own allies) won't stay with him. The approval rate for Mr. Bush's handling of Iraq plunged to 34 percent in last weekend's Newsweek poll - a match for the 32 percent that approved L.B.J.'s handling of Vietnam in early March 1968. (The two presidents' overall approval ratings have also converged: 41 percent for Johnson then, 42 percent for Bush now.) On March 31, 1968, as L.B.J.'s ratings plummeted further, he announced he wouldn't seek re-election, commencing our long extrication from that quagmire. (A war not intended to be 'won'.) But our current Texas president has even outdone his predecessor; Mr. Bush has lost not only the country but also his army. Neither bonuses nor fudged standards nor the faking of high school diplomas has solved the recruitment shortfall. Now Jake Tapper of ABC News reports that the armed forces are so eager for bodies they will flout "don't ask, don't tell" and hang on to gay soldiers who tell, even if they tell the press. The president's cable cadre is in disarray as well. At Fox News Bill O'Reilly is trashing Donald Rumsfeld for his incompetence, and Ann Coulter is chiding Mr. O'Reilly for being a defeatist. In an emblematic gesture akin to waving a white flag, Robert Novak walked off a CNN set and possibly out of a job rather than answer questions about his role in smearing the man who helped expose the administration's prewar inflation of Saddam W.M.D.'s. (On this sinking ship, it's hard to know which rat to root for.) As if the right-wing pundit crackup isn't unsettling enough, Mr. Bush's top war strategists, starting with Mr. Rumsfeld and Gen. Richard Myers, have of late tried to rebrand the war in Iraq as what the defense secretary calls "a global struggle against violent extremism." A struggle is what you have with your landlord. When the war's über-managers start using euphemisms for a conflict this lethal, it's a clear sign that the battle to keep the Iraq war afloat with the American public is lost…" |
RON GOSTICK, R.I.P.Paul Fromm of Canada Born in Wales, Ron emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1923. The family homesteaded near Stettler, Alberta. After nine years, the Gostick family, which now included brother William, moved to Calgary. Alberta was mired in the Great Depression, "widespread poverty amidst abundance," as Ron summed it up in "Canada: Its Glorious Potential - And Things I Didn't Learn in School" (2002). From 1933 to 1935, he attended Crescent Height High School. There his maths teacher and principal was William Aberhart, a proponent of Social Credit, the teachings of Scottish engineer Major C.H. Douglas, who applied practical Christianity to economics. Should the issue of credit ex nihilo be in the hands of private banks, Social Credit asked? With the fractional reserve system, a bank can lend many multiples of the dollars on deposit and, thus, issue credit and collect interest on the lending of this credit. Why should there be mass poverty in a land brimming with natural and human resources? What is physically possible should be made financially possible, Douglas argued. As Ron stated in the introduction of Canada: Its Glorious Potential: "Money, and in modern times Credit, in all their forms and instruments are the life-blood of society and the nation. For generations, practically all modern industrialized nations have experienced periods of boom times and inflation, followed by depression, hard times and a shortage of 'money' (purchasing power). And in recent decades, every country seems plagued with an escalating mountain of debt - and taxation to pay the interest on the debt." For the deeply Christian Mr. Gostick, Social Credit offered practical application of religion to politics and a blueprint out of the misery of the Great Depression. His mother thought so too, and ran for and won a seat in the first Aberhart Social Credit government in 1935. Ron went to college in Calgary and took further business studies in Chicago. He joined the Canadian Army in 1941 and served as a court reporter in Ottawa and Toronto. Immediately after the war, Ron served as the General Secretary of the Social Credit Party of Canada. Party intrigues soured him on political parties. Major Douglas had warned against the formation of a Social Credit Party, believing that it would be better to spread the philosophy of economic reform, hoping that people of good will in many parties would adopt it. Ron began his publishing activities, at first distributing copies of his newspaper by motorcycle around Ontario. A Social Creditor and journalist would seem to have made Ron fairly mainstream - at least not a subject for law enforcement scrutiny. However, his voluminous RCMP file, obtained some years ago by lawyer Barbara Kulazska reveals than his meetings were under Mountie surveillance as early as the late 1940s. Ron's Christian principles led him into many causes. He was a firm anti-communist at a time when trendy Canadians like Pierre Trudeau were open admirers of tyrants like Fidel Castro and Mao tse-Tung. When Rhodesia declared independence in 1965, he rallied to the cause of the Ian Smith experiment, grounded in Christianity and a gradual approach to Negro involvement. Ron strongly opposed the Pearson's pennant coup d'etat, the invention of a "new" Canadian flag and the abandonment of the Red Ensign, as a prelude to the changing of the country the flag symbolized, through massive Third World immigration, multiculturalism and the sacrificing of our sovereignty through internationalism. When Royal Canadian Legion Branch 333 became a hotbed of pro-Red Ensign sentiment, Dominion command in Ottawa, under political pressure, decreed that Ron Gostick must be purged as president or the branch would lose its accreditation. He was. Assisted by his longtime associate, former RCMP undercover agent Patrick Walsh, burly Irishman from Quebec City who spoke with a distinctly French accent, Ron warned repeatedly of communist infiltration and subversion in Canadian politics. In 1968, a new comet flashed across the firmament of Canadian politics. His name was Pierre Trudeau. The press promoted him as a fresh breath in Canadian politics, a change from the World War I generation of old war horses like John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson. Trudeau, Canadians were old, was trendy, irreverent, prone to wearing a cape or posing holding a rose rakishly in his mouth. Pat Walsh, a veteran as an undercover agent in communist circles in the Province of Quebec, recognized Trudeau and some of his associates. He'd briefly flirted with the NDP. Trudeau was far more to the left than the press was telling Canadians. Ron Gostick did an extraordinary thing. While the press gushed about Trudeau image and antics, he actually read what Trudeau had written and researched his activities. He found in Trudeau an admirer of Castro and Mao, a man who had visited Red China in the early 1960s at the depths of the "Great Leap Forward" famine, and returned gushing with admiration. Ron Gostick published his findings and, assisted with the list of Liberal convention delegates supplied by the disgruntled Paul Martin Sr's campaign, he began to circulate his warnings. Hundreds of thousands of the relevant pamphlets were distributed. In Toronto, Tory Senator Wallace McCutcheon funded the reprinting of perhaps 60,000 leaflets derived from Mr. Gostick's work by the fledgling Edmund Burke Society of which I was a member. I had first met Mr. Gostick the year before at a lecture at a downtown hotel. I was immediately impressed by his knowledge and methodology: quoting important sources and offering an illuminating commentary. Mr. Gostick's warning about Pierre Elliott Trudeau's affection for communism, his totalitarian streak and his eagerness to change Canadian society brought him a torrent of abuse. He was denounced as a "hatemonger." As has happened in so many instances since, his opponents didn't say he was wrong, didn't argue with his facts. They simply hollered "hate" and said he shouldn't have said those things. Within a few years, it became obvious that Ron Gostick's warnings were more than valid. Not until the early '70s did a few right of centre journalists like Lubor Zink and Peter Worthington dare to say what Ron Gostick had said in 1968. In the early 1980s, Ron warned of the dangers of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Far from granting us rights, it, in fact, restricts them. Under British Common Law, one had the right to do whatever one wanted, except what was expressly forbidden by law. Under the Charter the State grants citizens a seemingly impressive list of rights. Yet, this list can be and often is severely restricted by the courts - see, the many and growing limitations on freedom of speech. Other essentials, such as the ownership of property, aren't even listed as rights at all. More recently, Ron formed the Third Option for National Unity Committee. He worried both about Quebec separatism and Western alienation. There was a third option, he argued, to the extremes of separation, of totalitarian interfering rule from Ottawa. That option was to return to the letter of the BNA Act which granted direct taxation, education, health and many other functions to the provincial governments. Federal usurpation of these powers was at the heart of the legitimate grievances of the Quebec nationalists and the Western separatists. Ron Gostick was a gentle modest man. He spoke
to admiring audiences in Southern Africa, Australia, the U.S. and for
decades from coast to coast across Canada. His approach was one of quiet
persuasion. Teacher, thinking, leader, mentor, Ron Gostick, you will

OBITUARY: JOE VIALLSReaders of "On Target" will be saddened to learn of the death of Joe Vialls, on 18 July 2005. Joe was a major player on the Internet, contributing a number of stimulating theories about a variety of topics on his website. (https://www.joevialls.co.uk/)A staunch opponent of Globalism, and aware of the extent to which it could use terror and intimidation to achieve its goals, he used his training in military matters and knowledge of weapons to challenge existing "official" explanations of blasts and even to claim that the tsunami that killed many in Indonesia may have been set off by an atomic explosion. His theories were often "controversial" and not all agreed with them, but he was always stimulating as a writer and presenter of "politically incorrect" information. His death is a great loss to the freedom movements, and we extend our sympathies to his families and friends at this time of loss. |

SYDNEY CONSERVATIVE SPEAKERS' CLUBThe SCSC will be holding its 32nd AGM on this occasion. Following the proceedings an excellent video received from Sweden (English language) will be shown. The producer is Estonian Juri Lina, the author of the book, "Under the Sign of the Scorpion". It examines the role and the origins of the secret societies.
