MR. McEWEN AND FREE WOOL AUCTION SYSTEM

"The Country Party Leader, (Mr. McEwen) said today that a single wool marketing authority did not necessarily mean the end of the auction system". - Daily Telegraph, Sydney. May 12.

Mr. McEwen accompanied his remarks with the statement that majority decisions of woolgrowers have voted for a single wool marketing authority. However even an unrepentant supporter of socialist "orderly marketing" like Mr. McEwen must realise the matter does not rest there. Individuals do still have rights and the Australian constitution still stands as a formidable enemy of power hungry politicians who want to ride roughshod over those individuals who disagree with being railroaded into a socialist organisation, which is only going to make their lot worse in the long run.
There are still many woolgrowers and others who have not panicked completely and recognise the long-term implications of what is being proposed.

Perhaps Mr. McEwen has caught the drift of this opposition and the possibility that his schemes would not stand up to challenge, and is now proceeding more cautiously. It is to be hoped for the future of Australia as well as the wool industry and all those connected with it, there are those who understand there is more to be lost than gained in the few cents obtainable from Japanese buyers, and will work for principles which will eventually restore a just price with free marketing and the liberty of the grower to decide his own future.

UNIVERSITY HARDENS ON DISCIPLINE

"The Vice-chancellor of Sydney University, Professor B. R.Williams, has expelled two students for misconduct." - The Australian, May 16th, 1970.

It is encouraging to witness an instance of an academic institution taking a strong stand on internal discipline. We noted with approval some few months ago, the stand taken by Monash University, in Victoria in rejecting an application by Mr. Albert Langer, revolutionary academic agitator, for re-entry into this University, without doubt for the purpose of promoting subversion and disorder.
All possible support should be given to administrative academics such as Professor Williams, where a strong stand is taken by them to uphold the proper order within the field of their administration. In our so-called permissive society, with the tide running against the maintenance of law and order, this takes no little courage.

REACTIONS TO THE CAMBODIA INVASION

"Other members of the Cabinet and the White House staff are now expressing their opposition to the Cambodian invasion, and particularly to the way in which that decision was reached and carried out." - James Rest, The Sun, Melbourne May 12th.

Mr. Reston, senior editor of the New York Times probably the most powerful newspaper in America, certainly the mouth piece for the American left-wing liberal, has still not recovered from the breakdown in the pipe-line from the White House which gives the news before it happens. The indications are increasing that the Cambodian decision was reached by excluding all those who could be counted on to bring adverse pressure against the proposal.

As our report in On Target April 3 indicated, Mr. Nixon's Secretary of State, Mr. Rogers at that time assured the communists that the U.S. had no intention of invading Cambodia. Mr. Rogers silence since the invasion and reports similar to Reston's that members of Mr. Nixon's Cabinet are now expressing their opposition, indicate that such apostles of appeasement were not privy to the decision. Mr. Reston reports two other incidents, which show that Mr. Nixon is faced with blatant treason from within his administration. First, the New York Times received in a plain envelope a top-secret memo from Mr. Laird, Secretary of Defence, to the Chiefs of Staff containing his views on U.S. negotiations with the Soviet Union at the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. (SALT). Secondly a letter was sent to Mr. Rogers from 200 and more officers of the State Department protesting against the invasion of Cambodia and the renewal of the bombing of North Vietnam. Open reporting of such matters indicates the extent of the forces opposed to Mr. Nixon. The Cambodian policy is forcing them out into the open. Perhaps Mr. Nixon may now decide he may as well go on to North Vietnam.

"DEMOCRACY" AND CRICKET IN THE U.K.

Mr. Eric Butler dispatched the following report on the eve of leaving London for Southern Africa

Disturbing developments are taking place in what has been described as "the home of democracy." The British have also established a well-earned reputation for civilised behaviour. Cricket has been a reflection of the basic character of the British people. "That's not cricket" has been a statement with a deep-wealth of meaning. Well, both the spirit of democracy and cricket are being severely attacked in the United Kingdom today. All the Gallup Poll figures show conclusively that an overwhelming majority of the British people is opposed to the United Kingdom joining the European Economic Commission. But leading Marketeer, Lord Gladwyn, writes to the press opposing any suggestion of the British people having a direct say in their nation's future through a referendum. He claims that referenda have not been a success in other countries, and clearly infers that if British Governments took heed of majority opinion they would be re-introducing "undesirable" measures such as hanging.
Lord Gladwyn's view is typical of those who talk about the "sovereignty of Parliament".

Genuine democracy is, of course, primarily concerned about the sovereignty of the individuals comprising a nation. If the British people do not have the necessary wisdom to make a decision on the future of their nation, then how can they have enough wisdom to elect Members of Parliament with the necessary wisdom to make this decision for them? The truth is that those who think like Lord Gladwyn are determined to impose their internationalism on the British people irrespective of whether the British people want to be subjected to this internationalism or not.

The Gallup Polls also show that an overwhelming majority of the British people want the South African cricketers to have the right to come to the United Kingdom, and to play cricket with local cricketers willing to play with them, and in front of people prepared to pay to watch this cricket. In a country like the United Kingdom, with its traditional respect for law and order, and also respect for minorities, one would have thought that those who disapproved of the South Africans being allowed to come to play cricket, could have expressed their opposition by writing to the press, or simply by not attending the cricket. But encouraged by a hypocritical Prime Minister, who has raised no objections to Russian swimmers, the Red Choir, or other Russian groups coming to the United Kingdom, and by other politicians, Bishops and others who might reasonably be expected to be both civilised and logical, Communist-backed agitators are mounting an increasingly vicious campaign of opposition.

Typical of the plight of the Christian Church today, is the spectacle of one Anglican Bishop publicly stating that he proposes to pray for rain to wash out the South African cricketing matches: This has caused not only considerable disgust, but a great deal of laughter throughout the United Kingdom. Whatever the good Bishop might feel about the South Africans, he might with profit study Matthew 5, Chapter 45, which states….He maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust."

One cricket writer has observed that if South Africa were a major soccer nation, he doubts whether Prime Minister Wilson and his supporters would be acting as they are. This writer points out that there have been no protests against British teams meeting footballers under oppressive Communist regimes. There is in fact a great deal of "selective indignation" by the politicians and the Bishops. I should in fairness report that at least two Anglican Bishops have supported the South African cricket tour.

The viciousness of the anti - South African cricket tour may be judged by the fact that West Indian professionals playing with English counties have received threats of violence, not only against themselves, but also against their families. Three of these West Indians have expressed relief that their counties are not picking them for matches against the South Africans. But now there is the incredible situation of complaints being lodged with the Race Relations Board, claiming that these West Indian cricketers have been discriminated against on the basis of race, and that the county cricket clubs be prosecuted.
It is significant that no coloured cricketer playing in England has said he does not wish to play against the South Africans.

Former West Indian captain Gary Sobers is under heavy attack for refusing to condemn the South African cricket tour. Presumably the non Europeans playing cricket in England strongly desire to play against what is generally regarded as the best cricket team in the world today. Opponents of the South African tour are welcoming the threat of India, Pakistan and the West Indies not to participate in the Commonwealth games in Edinburgh if the cricket tour goes on. No one to date has observed that those allegedly so concerned about the lack of what they call "democracy" in South Africa, might suggest that no Indian cricket team should be welcomed in the United Kingdom until the wretched problem of the "untouchables" is removed in India, and that no Pakistani cricket team should be permitted to come until Army rule in Pakistan is abolished.
The Truth is that logic makes no impression on those determined to halt the South African cricket tour.

The great majority of these are not true sportsmen of any type. Students who talk about ruining cricket pitches, one suggestion being that locusts might be used, are rabble-rousing louts. They serve the purpose of those who wish to produce chaos in South Africa, as part of the global strategy for destroying what remains of Western Civilisation. The South African cricket tour of the United Kingdom will be more than a test for South African cricketers attempting to play cricket under provocation; it will be a test of the character of the British people. If law and order can be maintained, and the tour proceed satisfactorily, the revolutionary enemies of South Africa, and their dupes, will have suffered a major set back.

LIBERAL SEEKS RED PROBE

"Mr. McLeay (Lib, S.A.) last night gave notice that he would move for a parliamentary select committee to inquire into Communist subversion in Australia." - The Age, Melbourne, May 15, 1970.

It isn't all that long since Mr. McLeay had some outspoken and realistic statements to make on Communism and Australia's attitude thereto in the light of her own proper interests. As could have been anticipated, he was attacked for his views in the National Press. A parliamentary inquiry into communism and communist subversion in Australia would without doubt reveal some disturbing and frightening information from the point of view of the loyal, patriotic man in the street. From the viewpoint of the Communists, the implications of such an enquiry could be most serious indeed. Methods of subversion could be laid bare; the nature of organizations penetrated, and for what purposes revealed, and this could undo for the Communists what has taken years of slow and patient infiltration.
Worse still, there would be no guarantee just where the enquiry would stop. Names could be named, and secret Communist agents flushed out of their deeply embedded positions.

Mr. McLeay is to be heartily commended for his action. We can again anticipate that there will be a hostile reaction from our National Press.
